No one can ignore spirituality. If you’ve ever visited The Gambia, you hopefully had a chance to visit one of Banjul’s rich black sand beaches.
They offer a captivating blend of natural beauty and enchanting spirituality. This lesser-known gem, with its striking dark sands and rich marine life, provides an extraordinary experience that left an indelible mark on me.
The Allure of Black Sand
As I arrived at the beach, the first thing that caught my eye was the unusual color of the sand. Unlike the typical silver or white sands we often associate with tropical beaches, Banjul’s black sand is a result of minerals and rock fragments.
The contrast between the dark sand and the vibrant blue of the ocean creates a stunning visual spectacle, giving a perfect interpretation of beauty: diversity. With seashells scattered on the sand, for me it offered the additional caress of a foot scrub.
Walking barefoot on this unique terrain was a novel experience. The sand felt different—slightly coarser but surprisingly pleasant. I had an early morning stroll and then an evening stroll. The sun had settled, so the cool breeze tickled my skin. A soothing sensation as I wandered along the shoreline.
Seashells Galore
One of the most enchanting aspects of this beach is the abundance of seashells scattered along the coast. Every few steps, I stumbled upon a new variety, each more intricate and beautiful than the last.

From delicate conch shells to tiny, colourful clams, the beach seemed like a vast, natural art gallery. Collecting these treasures became an impromptu activity, and before long, my pockets were brimming with a kaleidoscope of shells. I couldn’t have them all, indeed, I didn’t need them all. The beach was going nowhere. I learned contentment, a spiritual definition of joy.
An Encounter with a Jellyfish
As I strolled along, lost in the beauty of my surroundings, I almost stepped on a jellyfish washed ashore by the tide. It lay there, translucent and slightly pulsating, an otherworldly creature stranded on the sand.
I had never seen a jellyfish in my life. This encounter was a stark reminder of nature’s diversities and how every living thing should be cherished. More importantly, a spiritual lesson in how we need each other. A little kindness, a little help makes the world a better place.
I carefully avoided disturbing it and took a moment to appreciate the jellyfish’s ethereal beauty. Its gelatinous body, shimmering in the sunlight, seemed almost magical. This unexpected meeting added a sense of adventure and discovery to my beach walk, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the sea.
A Tranquil Escape
Banjul’s black sand beach is more than just a scenic spot; it’s a sanctuary for those seeking tranquillity away from the bustling city life. The gentle sound of waves lapping against the shore, the salty breeze, and the vast expanse of the Atlantic stretching out before me created a serene atmosphere that was both relaxing and rejuvenating.
Banjul’s beach is a place where time seems to slow down. It’s a place to connect with nature, reflect, learn spirituality and simply be in the moment.
Final Thoughts Visiting Banjul’s black sand beach was an unforgettable experience. From the captivating colour of the sand and the plethora of seashells to the surprise encounter with a jellyfish, every aspect of the beach offered something unique. It’s a destination that appeals to the curious traveller, the nature enthusiast, and anyone looking to explore a different side of The Gambia. If you ever find yourself in Banjul, don’t miss the chance to experience these extraordinary beaches for yourself.
