What is the last thing you learned?
On a leisurely stroll through one of Paris’s low budget supermarkets, I stumbled upon a description in the fruit section that caught my eye. Among the usual array of colourful produce, a handwritten label stood out – Yellow Kiwi. Intrigued by an unfamiliar variety, I indulged myself in a serendipitous Paris discovery.
My equally curious friend decided to try it with me because until yesterday, the only kiwi we knew was green.

Beware, as Paris is not the only home of Yellow Kiwi. If you’re in Paris though, the best place to find fresh and high-quality yellow kiwi is at local markets such as Marché Bastille or Marché d’Aligre. These markets are known for their variety of fresh produce and knowledgeable vendors.
I didn’t know Kiwi had a yellow variety, so I started digging to find the other homes of this delicious treat.
Where to Find Yellow Kiwi
The variety we bought was from Portugal. I was embarrassed to know in all my time in Portugal, from fruity treats to comfort malassadas, I had not discovered this variety. But that is about to change. And I might even consider growing a vine of my own.
China and New Zealand are the world’s largest producers, but I am not quite ready to travel that far just yet. New Zealand is popular for the Zespri Sun Gold variety, which I must discover someday. In Europe, Italy is a major producer of yellow kiwi. The fertile regions of Lazio and Emilia-Romagna are particularly known for their high-quality produce.
As I dug my scoop into the succulent fruit, I tried to decide if I was romancing a sweet lemon mango or strawberry. I loved it. I thought about how quickly we generally are to accept variety in food and fruit. But not in each other. The thought left a bittersweet after taste, but I will ponder it another day.
For now, I just want to relish my sweet discovery.
